Back to the 60’s and 70’s Raft-up Report

August 8th began with not much wind and a sultry outlook for the Chesapeake Bay. Still, crews from 16 NSHSA boats descended on the Maryland Yacht Club ready to recreate the era of the 60’s and 70’s. Better breezes on Friday were enjoyed by Windkist IV, Xtasea, and Narsilion who made it early and were able to claim good spots to anchor out. They were joined later by the crews from Off the Charts, Mosella and Silent Running. Champagne, Podozary, Carpe Ventum, Windsprint, Contigo, Jo-lyn-dy, Aquila, and Dulcinea took slips at MYC. Already in attendance was the crew from Tomorrow Came. Everyone was excited about participating in this “blast from the past”. The crew from Dulcinea was at a decided disadvantage since none of them were even BORN until the 60’s and 70’s. However, their superior musical knowledge allowed them to be a worthy competitor in the music contest which was finally won by Eddie Sabol.

Back to the 60’s and 70’s photos were in abundance. The picture of Rex Noel in elementary school was a strong competitor for the top award which was claimed by voyager Cathy Johnson from Windkist IV. Maria from Mosella won the food and drink contest with her recreation of “White Castle Hamburgers”, closely followed by Sue Cameron’s “hamburger helper”. Frank Tedeschi took top honors in the period dress contest with an ORIGINAL pair of bell-bottomed, polyester checkered trousers which, incredibly, could still be worn (by Frank). In general, people remembered quite a bit of trivia from the 60’s and 70’s in another contest which was captured by Amy Noel, by no means a trivial lady at all.

The children of the crews in attendance thought they were exempt from any 60’s and 70’s nonsense but they got to compete against Wolf Milz while doing the limbo. Others showed their expertise with the hula hoop. A last minute addition to the group was the crew from Adventure Bound who made the festivities complete. Sunday brought good winds for the trip home for the many crews in attendance. Probably very few of them would like to ACTUALLY go back to the 60’s and 70’s but it was fun for a raft-up.
